Tru-Blu, a 98% technical grade sodium bromide, is added to your spa or hot tub water to supply the necessary bromine salt for your bromine generator. The electrodes in the generator, such as the Genesis Device, convert the sodium bromide (salt) into bromine (sanitizer) to maintain the sanitation in your spa or hot tub.
Sodium Bromide is sold for many different uses and is sold under different brand names dependent on the manufacturer. When using the 98% pure sodium bromide from Tru-Blu, please follow the instructions in the Tru-Blu manual or on the Tru-Blu website.
It is important to add the correct amount of Tru-Blu to your water when starting up the Genesis Device. This should be about 2 lbs of Sodium Bromide for every 100 gallons of water. It is recommended that you add less rather than more Sodium Bromide so that you do not go over the amount needed. (For example in a 650 gal spa, add only six 2lb bottles of Tru-Blu.) Then check the Sodium Bromide level. It should be between 1500 – 1900 ppm. If using the Tru-Blu test strips the reading should be between 7.6 and 8.0. Use the 2 oz cap on the bottle to add additional Sodium Bromide to bring the readings up to the correct level. One full cap increases the level 70ppm per 100 gallons of water.
Your water level will decrease over time due to evaporation, but your salt amount will not decrease, because salt is not lost in evaporation. Just replace the water lost. Salt levels will decrease if water is removed from the spa, such as during cleaning, because you are also removing the dissolved salt. In this case replace the water and use the test strips to determine how much additional salt is needed and then add it to bring your levels up to the correct level.
