Salt pools are becoming extremely popular. A salt pool still uses chlorine to sanitize but the chlorine is generated from the salt in the pool and not from the addition of chlorine directly to the pool. The advantages are that there is less use of chemicals and people say that the water feels nicer.

The following videos deal with different things that you may come across in connection with having a salt pool.

The first video deals with a new product from Hayward for testing Turbo cells. It is for dealers but  your dealer may have one and you should be aware that they are out in there. It also talks a little about the turbo cell stand and how it works.

This next video goes into more detail about the Turbo cell cleaning stand.

The following video talks about cells for generating chlorine from salt and the discontinuation of the Hayward W cell. It talks some about the difference in salt cells and why different ones though they all generate chlorine are different and may or my not be better.

The next 2 videos talk about how to test for salt in your salt pool. The first is on test strips which are the cheaper of the two methods. They are available for anyone to use. The second deals with a salt test meter. This is for the man (or woman) who likes his tools and toys. It is more expensive, but simple to use.

There will be additional blogs on salt systems. but this one covers a number of items that are good to know about.

An adjustable strap wrench can save you all kinds of problems. Because it works without teeth digging into the item you use it on you do not damage that item.  Gouges from the teeth on a regular wrench can mean that when you reassemble your part unless you have replaced the gouged part that the other parts do not fit properly. There are gaps that can lead to leaks.

The strap wrench puts even pressure around the entirety of the part, meaning that it is less likely to break the part. A regular wrench puts uneven pressure. Pressure is greater where the teeth cut in.

This is another must have tool for the men and ladies too!

When checking to see if you have power, DO NOT do as my friend’s instructor says, USE A METER.  Even a cheep meter is better than nothing.

You should use a meter to check your hot lead(s), your neutral, and your ground.  Check before turning the power off at the breaker and then check to make sure that the breaker you turned off really turn off ALL of the power.

The Fluke infrared thermometer can be a very handy tool. Point, push to shoot and get a temperature quick.
It is handy to check out the temperature of a pool or spa heater. But it is also good for other jobs around the house, such checking windows for heat or cooling loss.

If you have a cartridge filter in your spa or on your pool you need to clean the filter at least once per week. Pure and Clean filter cleaner is an excellent choice for cleaning the cartridges. It removes the dirt and debris from the filter.

Pure and Clean is an excellent cleaner for the grids in a DE filter as well.

It is a good idea to have 2 cartridges for your filter so that they can be rotated. Two filters comes in handy when the family wants to use the pool or hot tub and the filter needs to be cleaned. Just pop in the clean filter and the family can swim in the pool or soak in the hot tub, while you work without interference. ( Or jump in and enjoy with the family and clean the filter later. Just remember to clean the filter!)

Pure and Clean has other uses. It is excellent at cleaning the patio furniture, making it like new and saving from buying new. It will take off any scum lines on the pool or spa easily.
Filter cleaner

A PVC ram bit allows you to reuse a coupling or  valve already in your system to replace a piece of piping. The broken pipe is cut off smooth with the coupling or valve and then the ram bit is used to remove the pipe from the coupling so that it can be reused. It says your from replacing expensive valving or couplings and makes your job look more professional besides.

The ram bits come in different sizes to fit different size piping. It can be used on the fitting going into your equipment such as on a pool pump or a heater. Saving you time and expence.
