For pools the most popular filtration is also the oldest, sand filtration. All sand filters have 2 things in common. 1) Water flows from top to bottom when the filter is in filtration mode. And 2) they all have an under drain with slots or a lateral system that allows the filtered water to pass through and holds back the sand.

Typically sand filters use special filter sand that is .45 to .55 mm (#20 silica pool-grade sand) which has sharp edges that separate the particles allowing particles to be trapped. Initially large particles will be trapped and then as the sand loads up smaller particles will be trapped.

Sand filters need the sand media to be cleaned regularly by backwashing. This is the process by which the flow is reversed on the filter and the dirt is washed to waste.

Filter Finder can be a real time saver when you are trying to find the right cartridge filter for you spa or pool.

It can be used to find your filter quickly with only a few pieces of information.

If you know the manufacturer and model of your spa or filter cartridge, you can put those names into the filter finder and it will give you the filters available. If you have an old filter and it has a number on it, you can use that to find the All Parts number for your filter. If you have the old filter handy you can measure its length and diameter and use that to find you filter.

If you have multiple pieces of information, just put in the first one you have, wait for the screen to update and then add your next bit of information. You can add as many or as little information as you have. Just remember to wait for the screen to update in between each addition. When you have added all your information, hit the search button and

You will get a list of filters that fit your criteria.

The more information you enter, the shorter the list. But sometimes you may not see what you are looking for because you have put in too much information and one of them might be slightly off, such as a measurement. If you do not see your filter, use less pieces of information.

If you are using just measurements and you can not find what you are looking for, choose a slightly longer of slightly shorter length or diameter. Age and wear can effect these measurements.

Once you have the All Parts number, most of the filters show a picture that you can use to compare to your old filter. Be aware that sometimes there may be slight differences, such as the pull handle shape. These will still be the correct replacement. www.allpartspoolandspa.com

This is the time of year when you should be thinkiung about getting you pool equipment ready for the summer months. Summer will be here before you know it. Things are not so hectic the time of year. The holidays are past and the play season hasn’t started. Use the time to replace any broken parts on your sand filter and change the sand in the filter.

For the man who thinks he has everything, here is one more item to add to the list. And it is useful too! A sand filter sand vac for removing the sand sounds silly, but when you use it, you will love it.

The sand in your sand filter should be changed at least every three years. Changing it every year is even better.  One of the main reasons for not changing the sand is that it is a back breaking  job. It is messy. It is time consuming. and in general it is no fun!

The sand filter vac attaches to a garden hose and allows you to remove the sand from the sand filter easily. There is less chance of breaking the sand filter laterals. It is easier to maneuver in the small opening.

Finding your proper filter for your hot tub doesn’t  have to be a problem. Several people have asked what a DE filter is.  A DE filter is considered by many professionals in the pool industry to be the best filters available because it is capable of removing very small particles.

Diatomaceous earth is a porous powder with microscopic openings. These particles look like small sponges when magnified. Clean water passes through the openings and particles as small as 5 micron are trapped in the media.

A DE filter has internal elements or grids that are coated with the diatomaceous earth which filters our dirt, dust algae and because of the posre size some forms of bacteria.

When DE filters become dirty, the same as a sand filter, they need to be cleaned either by backwashing or draining to waste and then regenerated with a fresh charge of DE media.
